Why rail fence?

Rail fence is one of the most attractive fences that can be built on any property and it is also one of the easiest to make. A rail fence enhances the courtyard and its surroundings as it demarcates property lines without putting barriers. Though the rail
fence was originally used to prevent livestock from straying, its timeless natural attraction has made it a much desired addition to many a household.

How to get a Rail Fence done.

The Rail Fence is made up of vertical posts with two or three holes to support horizontal rails and can be found at any of the neighborhood home and garden centers. The height of the fence is according to the height of the posts, and generally is about 4feet above the ground. There are two, maybe three horizontal rails. It would cost anything between 7$750-1500$ to build a rail fence which is about 80 to 11- feet in length. One could hire a good contractor to do it or even venture out by oneself. The material required, if you are using wood, is wooden logs, rails, gravel and tools. In case a person decided to do the rail fence by himself, it could save about 50 % of the cost as compared to getting it done contractually. Tools required are a post-hole digger, shovel, carpenter's level, tape measure, string and stakes.

Rail fences made of bamboo are also becoming very popular for their grace and elegance. There are a lot of suppliers who give ready to fit bamboo rail fence, which also looks smart.
Bamboo fences are typical of oriental design and can be seen at Japanese or Chinese restaurants or constructions. Mature bamboo poles are used here and these are claimed to be structurally much stronger than wooden logs. To tie the rails to the Poles, Black Twine can be used to add some extra effect. A bamboo rail fence would need some sort of a protective coating on it.

Plastics and Vinyl's:

Then there are vinyl's and recycled plastics also becoming very popular. The primary reasons the wide design and color variety these materials bring along. The vinyl and plastic rail fences are not very heavy also as compared to the wooden logs. However, it has to be said that, for sheer sturdiness, the wooden logs still score over everything else.

Before you undertake any fencing project, consult your property survey so you know exactly where your property begins and ends. In most areas, a building permit is required to build a fence, so check with your local building department to see if one is needed.
